World-class breaks
at your doorstep.
Tavarua Island is known as one of the premier surf destinations in the world. With a variety of eight different breaks to choose from, there is something for every level of surfer to enjoy.
Cloudbreak
Cloudbreak's reputation is known throughout the surfing world as one of the best left hand barrels on the planet that can break from anywhere between 2ft - 20ft. Located just a mile and a half off of Tavarua Island, Cloudbreak is just a short boat ride away. This open-ocean reef break has three main sections that can link up creating multiple barrel opportunities. Regularly 4ft - 6ft, this wave can intensify with size.

“I’ve spent an infinite amount of hours in the water at Cloudbreak and it’s my favorite wave in the world.”
— 11x World Champion, Kelly Slater
Restaurants
Restaurants is a superior left that breaks over shallow reef directly in front of the restaurant of Tavarua Island Resort, hence the name "Restaurants". It's normally smaller than Cloudbreak and can offer a machine-like generated wave of perfection that screams down the line. Hollow and fast, it can break in the 2ft - 6ft range and is surfable at all tides dependent on your skill level.
Tavarua Rights
Located on the south-west side of the island, this right hander can range from playful to challenging depending on the swell. This wave is optimal when the winds shift to north or it goes glassy. It’s best on a medium to high tide and can be fun for all levels of surfers and all types of boards.
Namotu
Lefts
Located off of neighboring island, Namotu, this left-hander breaks in all kinds of conditions and can hold just about any size. It’s the perfect place for a beginner to intermediate surfer to enhance their skills as it’s more forgiving than Cloudbreak or Restaurants.
Wilkes
Pass
Wilkes is a powerful right hander that breaks at the far end of a long barrier reef across the channel from our neighbor, Namotu. A powerful right hander - Wilkes is at times a tricky wave but can hold size. It prefers north east winds and is consistent at higher tides.
Desperations
Farther northwest up the barrier reef from Wilkes Pass, Desperations is a right and left peak and is the go-to spot when no where else is breaking. It rarely disappoints as it’s a good time no matter what.
If you have questions about our ocean experiences, please review some of the commonly asked questions that we've collected here.
Do you provide surfboards?
+
ANSWER:
We provide a selection of soft tops available at a first come, first serve basis. We also have a small lineup of SUPs and Kayaks as well. It's advised to bring your own quiver if you're after something more serious than a soft top.
What's the surf boat schedule?
+
ANSWER:
There are 4 scheduled surf boats a day - 1st is at sunrise (between 5:30-6am), 2nd is at 9:30am, 3rd is at 1pm and 4th is at 3:30pm. If guests would like to organize an additional boat at a different time to a different surf break, you can inquire with the boys at the boat shed to schedule. A minimum of 5 people is suggested.
How do I tip?
+
ANSWER:
Tavarua has a “staff Christmas fund” which is a tip pool that is evenly distributed to the staff twice a year. You can organize this through the office upon checkout. You can also leave a tip for a particular staff member if desired. Cash and credit are accepted. Vinaka for supporting our staff!
Do you offer surf lessons?
+
ANSWER:
Yes! Between our volunteer lifeguards and local Fijian boatmen, you are sure to catch your very first wave or improve your surfing abilities while on Tavarua (for an additional fee)!
How do I access drinking water during my stay?
+
ANSWER:
We encourage you to bring your reusable water bottles for your stay. We have two water stations (one located in the restaurant and one by the boat shed) where you can fill up with our delicious chilled drinking water. If you forget a water bottle, we sell awesome Tavarua-branded Mizu bottles in the boutique.
What essentials do I need to bring?
+
ANSWER:
The sun is more powerful in Fiji so sun protection is key! Hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and a rash guard are highly recommended. As the typical weather is warm, casual loungewear, plenty of swimwear and a light rain jacket for afternoon wind and showers might come in handy. Many guests bring a lite board bag for surf transfer and a waterproof bag for the daily essentials. We also recommend a simple first aid kit to keep on hand. Our boutique carries most of the necessities should you forget anything. It’s recommended that serious enthusiasts bring their personal gear for activities that the island usually provides for. If these activities are your primary focus skateboards, tennis rackets and favorite snorkel gear are worth bringing along. The same thing applies with fishing.
