Mission Blue

is an amazing global coalition led by legendary oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle that calls for public awareness, access, and support for a worldwide network of marine protected areas…

As a long standing pioneer of deep sea diving and celebrated oceanographer. we’ve long admired Dr. Sylvia Earle (aka her deepness) with unwavering dedication and passion for our shared playground, the ocean.

We are overjoyed to do our part and join Misison Blues endeavor of healthy Oceans and improved Marine BIODIVERSITY.

The waters that surround our heart shaped island contain more than 1/3 of the worlds coral species and Indo Pacific’s Coral Reef Fish! Known for our Giant Clam nursery Tavarua Island organically supports a diverse set of important marine species both on island and the surrounding waters, including * but not limited too *

  • Soft Coral Species

  • Banded Sea Snakes

  • 3 x Endangered Sea Turtles Including:

    • Green Sea, Hawksbill, and Leatherbacks.

  • Spinner Dolphins

  • A Range Of Migratory & Pelagic Fish

  • An Array Of Invertebrates, Several Shark Species

  • + Even The Occasional Migrating Whale!

We have been recgonized for our dedication to education with our staff, guests, and action through sustainable business practices and increasing environmental awareness.

The improving health of the reef and growing clam population have been both encouraging and inspiring. However, it is working alongside the local Fijians, watching them learn and take a genuine interest in their ocean and adjoining reef system as they become stewards of this precious environment, that is what I find most gratifying.

Tavarua's Giant Clam Restoration

Tavarua Island is honored to be working with the Fijian Department of Fisheries to care for and nurture the endangered giant clam species.

servais17_013099.JPG

With focus on education & conservation

Tavarua Island celebrated World Oceans Day by welcoming 500 baby clams to the island.  With hopes of improved reproduction in the wild among our local reef & Fiji as a whole.  We are overjoyed to be contributing to the rejuvenation of these majestic creatures!

Fishing restrictions instated over two years ago by the Viagwane Na Tui Lawa and supported by the Tavarua staff and surrounding villages helped to rehabilitate the reef system surrounding the island. After surveying the reef, the Fijian Fisheries Department selected Tavarua as an ideal location due to it's prime location, pristine ecosystem, and clean currents.

Kelly Slater, John John Florence, Rosey Hodge and Tavarua Managing Director Rick Isbell took a seaplane to the remote and protected island of Makogai.

After touring the Fisheries facility, they brought back infant clams along with a reproductive mate for the existing population.  It is our hope that by nurturing and protecting this endangered species, we can bring back a healthy population of these magical creatures along with the many symbiotic specimens that they rely on.

Vinaka Levu to all parties involved including The Fijian Government, Department of Fisheries, Mokogai Research Facility, Outerknown & WSL for making this project possible!  For more info follow the links below...

"Travel is the best thing in the world, and for us to get out of our comfort zones is a good thing. Tavarua does that, but it’s also the most comfortable place for a surfer to put himself. There’s time there for extended conversation." - Mark Cunningham

25 Years of TAVarua Through the Lense of Tom Servais & Life of Kelly Slater

Wander around the 29-acre island of Tavarua and you find all kinds of marvelous things: a kava ceremony in full swing with hard clapping and baritone Bula’s, a 12-inch sea snake squirming its way up the beach, a huddle of boatmen sipping beers and talking story, a wife of a world champion surfer riding her first wave at Kiddieland.
